The History of Discovery Cruising |
|
| Discovery Cruises operates under
the control of a registered Scottish Charity (No. SC 015412) Christian Discovery
Trust. Formed in December 1987, its purpose is - "To advance the Christian faith and provide a caring ministry through the provision of instruction in seamanship and navigation in cruises particularly for young people and youth groups with an emphasis on their personal potential and the value of living together in a caring friendly Christian atmosphere." For 6 years, the yacht Trebizond was used, sailing over 3,000 miles each year covering the whole of the West Coast of Scotland and beyond. In June 1994, the Trust commissioned a new Moody 38 named Emmaus, custom built to suit the requirements of the Trust. The yacht, equipped with all safety equipment, complies fully with the Department of Transport Code of Practice for small Commercial Sailing Vessel. The Skipper holds all the appropriate qualifications and has over 30 years of experience on cruising on the West Coast of Scotland. Emmaus now provides up to 20 cruises each year covering some 4,000 miles. When not being used by young people, the yacht provides cruises for students and adults. Turnover in 2005 reached £31,058 - with a surplus of £738 compared with a loss of £748 in 2004. We aim to break even! In 2006, we made a bigger surplus, but a loss again in 2007 of £1,206 and a loss in 2008. The Trust relies on the support of many volunteers. Some assist as Mates and others offer practical support with tasks such as maintenance work, promotion, supplying food and cooking meals. The Trust receives financial support from many individuals, Churches and other Trusts making it possible to fulfil its ministry amongst young people. |
